FAQ

DO YOU DO SCHOOL VISITS?

UPDATE: I'm afraid I'm booked up for the 2018-2019 school year and most of the 2019-2020 school year (schools that were on the wait list should be hearing from Evan Munday or me soon). As I have young kids, for the next several years I will be mostly prioritizing visits in the PNW (especially around Seattle). My apologies! I wish there was more time! You can reach me at clantoons dot books at gmail.com.

Absolutely! I love doing school visits! I enjoy working with all ages. But prefer working with smaller groups (one session for each age group k-1st, 2nd-3rd, 4th-5th, 6th-7th-8th or a similar breakdown that has like ages in the same session) as opposed to an assembly (but am okay with assemblies too!). Sessions/workshops usually involve talking with the kids about making books, reading, doing drawings for the kids, and with the older grades doing more hands-on activities. Lots and lots of visuals and as much interaction as possible. Also, I am happy to tie-in relevant topics that the kids are studying (i.e. perhaps your class is learning about plot, I can make a particular effort to talk about that subject). I modify my program to fit with each school's needs.

My rate is a $1200/day (up to 7 sessions!), plus travel and lodging. Money from a book-sale is a great way to finance visits. I do not personally sell my books, but titles may be acquired from my publishers at a discount. Also consider coordinating a book sale through your local book store! Teaming up with other schools is also a fantastic idea.

MAILING ADDRESS?

I love to hear from readers! Which won't be much of a surprise to those who are familiar with my book IT CAME IN THE MAIL. I will do my utmost to respond and within a month (unfortunately I can be a bit scattered . . . but I don't mind gentle nudges!).

DO YOU DO SKYPE VISITS?

I plan on doing some free FB LIVE sessions next school year but currently am not booking new Skype visits.

WILL YOU ILLUSTRATE MY BOOK?

If you are looking to publish a children's book I recommend joining SCBWI. It is an amazing organization! Typically publishers prefer to match an illustrator with the books they acquire and the author and illustrator have very little contact if any. I am mainly illustrating only my own stories at the moment and only considering illustrating manuscripts that come to me via my agent Marietta Zacker.

WILL YOU CRITIQUE MY STORY?

Sorry, but no. I simply do not have the time and I do not want to run into the issue of having a similar story or idea. I recommend joining SCBWI and joining or forming a critique group. Also, go to conferences and workshops! Best wishes with your story. I hope to find it in a bookstore!

I am happy to take a look at your website and portfolio! Please feel free to share a link with me.

ARE YOU GOING TO WRITE A CHAPTER BOOK?

Yes, in the works! Though it will likely be some years from now before I finish.
